Uses of Xarelto
Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that is used to prevent and treat blood clots. It is commonly prescribed to lower the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in individuals with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Additionally, it is used for treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as for preventing DVT—which can lead to PE—in patients who are undergoing knee or hip replacement surgeries.
Precautions and Warnings
Xarelto increases the risk of bleeding, including serious and potentially fatal bleeding events. Inform your healthcare provider if you have any planned surgical or invasive procedures, as you may need to temporarily stop taking the medication.
Extra caution is advised when using Xarelto in patients with severe kidney or liver impairment, as these conditions can affect the drug’s safety and efficacy. It is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary due to potential risks to the unborn child.
Dosage
The recommended dosage of Xarelto varies based on the condition being treated:
- Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: The standard dose is 20 mg once daily with the evening meal.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: Initial dose of 15 mg twice daily for the first 21 days, followed by 20 mg once daily.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis after Knee or Hip Replacement Surgery: 10 mg once daily, starting 6 to 10 hours post-surgery, for 12 days (knee) or 35 days (hip).

Generic medication is simply a medication that has been manufactured by a different company, rather than the company who originally held the patent on the product. Generic medications work in the exact same manner as brand name medications and are bio-equivalent to their brand name counterparts. Generic versions of medications cost far less because they invest less money on marketing.

In fact, many of these companies are doing contract manufacturing for the North American market, and therefore their facilities are FDA approved.
