Uses of Prozac

Prozac is an antidepressant medication commonly prescribed for managing episodes of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, and bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder. As a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), it works by improving mood, appetite, energy levels, and sleep. Additionally, Prozac helps to alleviate undesirable emotions such as anxiety, fear, and suicidal ideation.

Prozac is also used for treating premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and is available under the generic name Fluoxetine.

Prozac Precautions and Warnings

Prozac should not be taken by individuals who have an allergy to it. The medication carries a risk of inducing suicidal thoughts in some users. If you observe any behavioral changes, increased depression, or anxiety attacks, seek immediate medical attention.

Before beginning treatment with Prozac, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of the following conditions:

• Sexual dysfunction
• Liver cirrhosis
• Diabetes
• Seizures
• Bipolar disorder
• Substance abuse

Prozac Dosage

Recommended dosages for Prozac are:

For Depression:

• 20 mg taken orally once daily.
• Maximum daily dosage: 80 mg.

For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD):

• 20 mg taken orally once daily.
• Maximum daily dosage: 80 mg.

For Panic Disorder:

• 10 mg taken orally once daily.
• Maximum daily dosage: 60 mg.

For Bulimia:

• 60 mg taken orally once daily.

For Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD):

• 20 mg taken orally once daily.
• Maximum daily dosage: 80 mg.

Prozac Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

• Unusual mood changes
• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Muscle weakness
• Tremors
• Decreased sexual desire
• Unexpected weight loss
