Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic type of arthritis that primarily affects the spine and joints in the body. It can result in pain, stiffness, inflammation, and long-term damage if not treated. The condition typically occurs in early adulthood and is more common in men than women.

The exact cause of AS is unknown, but is thought to be linked to genetics and immune system dysfunction. People with a specific gene, HLA-B27, are more susceptible to developing AS. The immune system attacks healthy tissues, leading to inflammation and pain.

Symptoms of AS vary but commonly include lower back and hip pain and stiffness, as well as pain and stiffness in other joints such as shoulders, knees, and ankles. Other symptoms may include fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, eye inflammation, breathing difficulties, reduced mobility, and flexibility.

Treatment for AS focuses on reducing pain and inflammation, improving mobility, and preventing complications. This may involve medications such as NSAIDs, DMARDs, and biologic drugs, as well as physical therapy and lifestyle changes like exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and practicing good posture.

While there is no way to prevent AS, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent complications. Individuals with a family history of AS should be aware of symptoms and seek medical attention if needed.
