If you’ve experienced a heart attack, acute coronary syndrome, or other cardiovascular problems, taking the prescription medication Brilinta may help lower your risk of subsequent heart attacks and strokes.

But what about drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages while on Brilinta? The good news is that caffeine does not interfere with this medication. However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

What is Brilinta?

Brilinta is a blood thinner that:

  1. Helps prevent blood clots that could lead to heart attacks or strokes.
  2. Reduces the risk of another cardiovascular episode.
  3. Decreases the chance of death from severe cardiovascular incidents.
  4. Supports individuals with vascular stents due to its anticoagulant properties.

Depending on your condition, Brilinta is available in two dosages: 60 mg and 90 mg. It is often prescribed along with low-dose aspirin to amplify its cardiovascular benefits. However, it’s essential not to exceed 100 mg of aspirin daily, as higher doses can reduce Brilinta’s effectiveness.

Is it safe to consume caffeine while taking Brilinta?

Considering that coffee is a popular source of caffeine, it’s important to understand how it interacts with Brilinta and any other medications you might be taking.

Current research indicates no negative interactions between caffeine and Brilinta.

According to Ani Rostomyan, Pharm.D., BCPS, APH, a pharmacogenomics pharmacist, both caffeine and Brilinta are metabolized in the liver through different enzymes. As a result, they do not naturally interact, and there is no documented evidence of adverse interactions.

Brilinta side effects

Brilinta does have potential risks and side effects. The most notable risk is an increased chance of bleeding since it inhibits clotting. If you experience any of the following, contact your doctor immediately:

  • Urine that appears pink, red, or brown.
  • Wounds or cuts that bleed more than usual.
  • Vomiting blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds.
  • Blood clots or coughing up blood.
  • Sticky stools that are red or black.

Users of Brilinta may also notice increased bruising and nosebleeds. Less common side effects include difficulty breathing and changes in respiratory patterns. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
