Uses of Vimovo
Vimovo is a combination medication that includes esomeprazole and naproxen. Naproxen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), reduces inflammation, pain, and fever by inhibiting specific substances in the body. Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, decreases stomach acid production. Vimovo is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.
Precautions and Warnings
Vimovo should not be used immediately before or after heart bypass surgery. Patients should consult their healthcare provider if they have conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, liver disease, or kidney disease before taking Vimovo.
It is important to note that naproxen can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and renal issues, and it may increase the risk of a potentially fatal heart attack or stroke. Additionally, esomeprazole can worsen or cause new lupus symptoms.
Dosage
For adults with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis, the typical dose is one Vimovo tablet taken twice daily. Each tablet contains either 375 mg of naproxen with 20 mg of esomeprazole or 500 mg of naproxen with 20 mg of esomeprazole.
For patients aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 38 kg, the dosage remains the same: one tablet taken twice daily, each containing 375 mg of naproxen and 20 mg of esomeprazole.
