Uses of Isoptin SR
Isoptin SR, containing the active compound verapamil, belongs to the class of medications known as calcium channel blockers. It is mainly prescribed for managing mild to moderate hypertension (high blood pressure) when other treatments, such as beta-blockers or diuretics, are not suitable or have caused adverse reactions. Isoptin SR operates by relaxing blood vessels, which helps to regulate blood pressure and reduce the incidence of angina episodes.
Precautions and Warnings
Prior to beginning treatment with Isoptin SR, several precautions and warnings should be taken into account. This medication should be avoided in individuals with a known allergy to verapamil or any of its ingredients.
Isoptin SR is not recommended for patients with severe congestive heart failure, significant left ventricular dysfunction, abnormally low heart rate, specific heart rhythm disorders, second- or third-degree heart block, significantly low blood pressure, or sick sinus syndrome. Additionally, it should not be used in patients taking medications like ivabradine or flibanserin.
Dosage
The prescribed dosage of Isoptin SR depends on the medical condition being addressed and the specific formulation prescribed.
Generally, for most medical conditions, adults are advised to take 80 mg to 120 mg of the medication 3 or 4 times daily with meals, with a maximum daily dose not exceeding 480 mg. However, certain cardiac conditions might require higher doses, ranging from 600 mg to 720 mg daily.
